How to Save Money on Health Insurance

Health insurance can be quite expensive, so it isn't surprising that many people are looking for ways to save money on their Illinois health insurance. At the same time, it is important to realize that sensible money management with relation to any form of insurance is not about finding the lowest rate, it is about finding the right balance of premium and coverage. If you aren't covered, a single incident or illness can place you in debt for an extended period of time. Generally speaking, paying for insurance is a better financial decision than not paying for it. That said, here are some things that you can do in order to save money on your health plan.

Be Thorough

Make sure that you take as much time as you can comparing plans. The fact of the matter is, health insurance plans are often very difficult to compare. Oftentimes, trying to compare to plans can feel like comparing apples and oranges. There is no such thing as standard coverage, which makes the process very complicated. Even so, you need to compare every aspect of a plan in order to truly reach a conclusion that makes sense for you. Compare the premiums, deductibles, copayments, and coverage in order to make an informed decision.

Look for Insurance Plans with Limited Networks

If you want to get a reasonable rate on health insurance with good coverage, low premiums, and low co-payments, one of the best ways to do this is to choose a plan with a limited number of preferred providers. The narrower your selection of doctors, hospitals, labs, and so forth, the less you will be required to spend. If you want a wider selection of providers, you will either have to reduce your coverage, pay higher premiums, make higher co-payments, or some combination of all three. It is becoming more common for you to be able to check up on the track record of providers within the network before signing up for a plan. Various public and private sources compile this information.

Group Health Plans and Joint Accounts

If insurance is offered through your employer, it will almost always be a better deal than anything you will be able to find on your own. This is true regardless of your age, although if you are older the savings will likely be even more beneficial. While it certainly won't hurt to take a look at plans offered by other providers, group coverage is nearly always the better deal, especially if the employer is paying for part of the coverage.

Under circumstances where you are married, the decision about which provider to choose can be somewhat more difficult if both of you are working and both of your employers offer a group health insurance plan. Unless you work for the same employer, you will have to do your research to determine if it is more cost affective to sign up for separate plans or to combine them.

Beware of Coverage Gaps

Even very good health insurance plans have loopholes that you will need to watch out for. Any reputable health insurance company will pay for your time in the hospital. Most of them will also pay for a visit to the doctor. Even so, coverage for dental work, mental health, and prescription medications are often not covered. The same is true for certain lab tests and various other circumstances.

Remember that the cheapest premium is not always the cheapest plan. The costs that you will be required to pay up front can often be a more important factor in the cost of the plan than the actual premium. If you are making a low monthly payment but making ridiculously high payments every time you see a doctor, the plan can actually end up costing you more.
